Excellent Research on the topic of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases was honored
Congratulations go to PD Dr. Matthias Engel (Department of Medicine 1 – Gastroenterology, Pneumology and Endocrinology, Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Markus F. Neurath). PD Dr. Matthias Engel was awarded with the coveted Dr. Willmar Schwabe-Award. The committee of experts honored his years of research on the topic of TRP (Transient Receptor Potential) ion channels and neuropeptides and their mechanisms of actions with regard to pain and inflammation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). For the first time the work of PD Dr. Matthias Engel explained the molecular and cellular mechanisms of menthol (extracted from Peppermint oil) and carvone (extracted from caraway oil) and their pain inhibiting and anti-inflammatory effects in IBD. PD Dr. Matthias Engel travelled to Shanghai to receive the award.
The Dr. Willmar Schwabe-Award is given to young researchers that deal with the scientific issue of herbal medicine in an interdisciplinary approach. The prize is named after Carl Emil Willmar Schwabe, a pharmacists, author and employer who worked in the 19th and 20th century in Leipzig. The prize is awarded every two years and recognizes excellent pharmacological and clinical research in the fields of drug substances and natural products as well as isolated substances and extracts. The Dr. Willmar Schwabe-Award is donated and financed with 10.000 Euro by the Karlsruher Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co. KG.
Congratulations go to PD Dr. Matthias Engel, PI of the TRR241 Project B05 “Neuropeptides and TRP channels as effectors in colonic epithelial and immune cell function in IBD”, who was honored for his excellent work on TRP channels and neuropeptides in IBD.
